A fire broke out Sunday evening at Valero Energy's 301,000 b/d Corpus Christi, Texas, refinery, leading to emissions of a harmful substance, the company said in a regulatory filing to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

"A loss of containment and subsequent localized fire resulted in reportable emissions," Valero said in a Monday afternoon filing, referring to the cause of the emission event.

In the filing, Valero listed a crude unit as the facility related to the fire incident.

It is not known if the fire affected production at the plant. A Valero representative did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.

An estimated 210 lbs of heptane was released, the company said.

Heptane is a colorless, volatile and flammable liquid used in the petroleum refining process and is also a major component of gasoline and petroleum-based fuels.

The Corpus Christi refinery includes East and West plants on the Texas Gulf Coast along the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. The facility produces gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, aromatics and asphalt and its products are delivered by pipelines and barges.
