Race Oncology's (ASX:RAC) investors will be pleased with their stellar 240% return over the last five years

Race Oncology Limited (ASX:RAC) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 25% in the last quarter. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. We think most investors would be happy with the 240% return, over that period. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. While the returns over the last 5 years have been good, we do feel sorry for those shareholders who haven't held shares that long, because the share price is down 60% in the last three years.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

Race Oncology wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

For the last half decade, Race Oncology can boast revenue growth at a rate of 59% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Meanwhile, its share price performance certainly reflects the strong growth, given the share price grew at 28% per year, compound, during the period. So it seems likely that buyers have paid attention to the strong revenue growth. Race Oncology seems like a high growth stock - so growth investors might want to add it to their watchlist.
