Southwest CEO: Macro Softness Will Extend Through 2Q, Ease Later in Year -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
03-12

1241 ET - Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan says at the J.P. Morgan Industrials Conference that the company is seeing a broad softness across the macro economy, prompting it to lower its 1Q outlook. "It's hard to attribute to any one thing," he says, adding that fewer bookings, higher-than-expected completion factor, less government travel, California wildfires and recent aviation incidents all hurt demand. As it stands, the company expects this broad softness to extend through most of the 2Q before easing through the remainder of the year, Jordan says. Shares rise 9.5% after Southwest says it plans to start charging for checked bags. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
