With its stock down 18% over the past three months, it is easy to disregard Covenant Logistics Group (NYSE:CVLG). However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financials over the long term, which in this case look pretty respectable. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Covenant Logistics Group's ROE today.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.

The formula for return on equity is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Covenant Logistics Group is:
8.1% = US$35m ÷ US$438m (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. That means that for every $1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated $0.08 in profit.
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
When you first look at it, Covenant Logistics Group's ROE doesn't look that attractive. A quick further study shows that the company's ROE doesn't compare favorably to the industry average of 13% either. In spite of this, Covenant Logistics Group was able to grow its net income considerably, at a rate of 30% in the last five years. So, there might be other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.
We then compared Covenant Logistics Group's net income growth with the industry and we're pleased to see that the company's growth figure is higher when compared with the industry which has a growth rate of 11% in the same 5-year period.
Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Has the market priced in the future outlook for CVLG? You can find out in our latest intrinsic value infographic research report.
Covenant Logistics Group has a really low three-year median payout ratio of 7.9%, meaning that it has the remaining 92% left over to reinvest into its business. So it looks like Covenant Logistics Group is reinvesting profits heavily to grow its business, which shows in its earnings growth.
Moreover, Covenant Logistics Group is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of three years of paying a dividend.
On the whole, we do feel that Covenant Logistics Group has some positive attributes. Even in spite of the low rate of return, the company has posted impressive earnings growth as a result of reinvesting heavily into its business.
