Nissan will eliminate 20% of its top management positions in an continuing overhaul of its leadership structure.

The carmaker said Wednesday that the job cuts will create a more streamlined and borderless organization. The disclosure comes a week after Ivan Espinosa was appointed to be its new chief executive, prompted by Nissan and rival Honda scrapping their planned merger.

Nissan didn't disclose the number of jobs that will be cut. The Japanese manufacturer employed more than 133,500 employees as of March 31, according to its website.

The workforce reduction is set to begin April 1, the same day as Espinosa is set to succeed Makoto Uchida as CEO.

Moving forward, Nissan said its top management positions will transition to a single-layer, non-officer framework, under which all corporate officers will assume the title of corporate executive.

The company also announced several changes to its executive committee. These include Eiichi Akashi, who currently oversees Nissan's vehicle planning and component-engineering division, succeeding Kunio Nakaguro as chief technology officer; Teiji Hirata, who currently helms the company's vehicle production engineering and development division, will succeed Hideyuki Sakamot as chief monozukuri officer, responsible for manufacturing and supply chain management.
