TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Persistent heavy rainfall in Manado City, North Sulawesi, since the morning of Friday, March 21, 2025, has resulted in flooding across six sub-districts.

Reports obtained by Tempo indicate that the affected sub-districts in Manado City include Tikala, Wenang, Singkil, Tuminting, Sario, and Malalayang. In areas such as Tikala and Singkil, water levels reached the hip height of adults.

Idham Adrias, a resident of Ternate Baru Village, Singkil, attributed the flooding to sustained high rainfall over the past three days. He noted that on Friday, March 21, 2025, the rainfall was particularly intense and continuous, lasting for more than seven hours.

"Signs of flooding were evident from the afternoon. Now, almost all residential properties in Ternate Baru sub-district are inundated," Idham told Tempo on Friday, March 21, 2025.

Idham further reported that, as of Friday night, water levels in Ternate Baru sub-district had reached the hip height of adults, with some locations experiencing levels up to chest height, exceeding 1.5 meters. "Some residents have opted to evacuate. Currently, the rain continues to fall," Adrias added.

Indra Pomalingo, a resident of Ketang Baru sub-district, Manado City, reported that nearly all areas of Manado City were submerged, with water depths ranging from 50 to 80 centimeters. The villages located along the Tondano River basin (DAS) were particularly affected.

"All residential properties along this river are submerged. In Ketang Baru sub-district alone, more than 400 houses are inundated," Indra said.

Manado Mayor Andrei Angouw attributed the widespread flooding to extreme weather and heavy rainfall experienced over the past two days.

The North Sulawesi Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had issued a forecast predicting moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in Manado City on Friday, March 21, 2025.

"Currently, almost all areas of Manado City are submerged. However, the situation remains under control. We hope it does not worsen. We are continuing to monitor, especially as the rain persists," Andrei said.
