Telecom Companies Bet on Fiber as Ticket to AI Boom -- Market Talk

1520 ET - Fiber operations are a big opportunity for telecommunications companies to capitalize on the rise of data-center construction to power artificial intelligence, Citizens analyst Greg Miller tells WSJ. Data centers are increasingly being built in remote areas like North Dakota and Alabama, where there is more power available for them, but those centers need a lot of fiber to connect them back to a broader network, Miller says. Telecom companies are trying to get ahead of this: Zayo just bought Crown Castle's fiber segment and AT&T is reportedly in talks with Lumen Technologies to buy its fiber unit, following a deal for Lumen to provide fiber for Microsoft's data centers.
