If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So on that note, Federal Signal (NYSE:FSS) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Federal Signal:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.19 = US$283m ÷ (US$1.8b - US$242m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
Thus, Federal Signal has an ROCE of 19%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 12% generated by the Machinery industry.
