Canada is prepared to retaliate against President Trump's tariffs, said Doug Ford, leader of Ontario, the country's most populous province.
"I think the only acceptable tariff is zero," Ford said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. He said he spoke with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick last week, but hasn't spoken with him since.
In an interview with NBC, Ford said that Canada will retaliate if Trump moves ahead with tariffs on Wednesday. "We are going to retaliate appropriately, but hard," said Ford. Ontario's economy is heavily dependent on an auto industry that Trump has targeted with 25% duties, and Ford has been one of Canada's most vocal voices calling for retaliation.
He cautioned that Americans will lose jobs as a result of the tariffs, soon after Trump announces his reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday. "I don't call it Liberation Day for Americans, I call it Termination Day, because there are people going to be laid off. Assembly lines will shut down," said Ford.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that Canada would hit back at the U.S., but added that it would take a deliberate approach to avoid hurting Canadian workers.
