If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, European Wax Center (NASDAQ:EWCZ) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for European Wax Center:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.075 = US$50m ÷ (US$707m - US$36m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to January 2025).
Thus, European Wax Center has an ROCE of 7.5%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Consumer Services industry average of 9.7%.

Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 7.5%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 23%. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
To sum it up, European Wax Center has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. And since the stock has dived 85% over the last three years, there may be other factors affecting the company's prospects. In any case, we believe the economic trends of this company are positive and looking into the stock further could prove rewarding.
