Construction-Equipment Dealers' Outlooks Start to Shift as Tariff Uncertainty Increases -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
04-03

1105 GMT - Construction-equipment dealers are now focusing on tariffs and other political uncertainties, a stark change from a quarter ago when the change in administration caused an initial wave of optimism, D.A. Davidson's Michael Shlisky and Linda Umwali say in a research note. The analysts note that check-ins with about 20 dealers give them the sense that heavy-equipment retail sales underperformed expectations in 1Q and that the downside will continue into 2Q. Caterpillar is the most exposed to these trends, while Deere, CNH Industrial and Toro are all significantly less exposed, the analysts say. "With tariff questions potentially out of the way following yesterday's announcements, perhaps some (though not all) of this uncertainty will subside." (denny.jacob@wsj.com; @pennedbyden)
