President Trump is ordering a new review of the proposed merger between Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.
The White House on Monday said the review is meant to assist the president in determining whether further action would be appropriate.
In January, former President Joe Biden prohibited the merger, citing national-security concerns over a Japanese steelmaker buying Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel, after an earlier CFIUS review.
The new CFIUS review will be conducted de novo, meaning it won't be bound by previous decisions.
President Donald Trump said in February he would not mind if Nippon Steel took a minority stake in U.S. Steel.
