Nordic American Tankers (NYSE:NAT) shareholders have lost 39% over 1 year, earnings decline likely the culprit

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. Investors in Nordic American Tankers Limited (NYSE:NAT) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 45%. That falls noticeably short of the market decline of around 2.0%. However, the longer term returns haven't been so bad, with the stock down 22% in the last three years. Furthermore, it's down 13% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. But this could be related to the weak market, which is down 16% in the same period.

After losing 12% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unfortunately Nordic American Tankers reported an EPS drop of 53% for the last year. We note that the 45% share price drop is very close to the EPS drop. So it seems that the market sentiment has not changed much, despite the weak results. Rather, the share price is remains a similar multiple of the EPS, suggesting the outlook remains the same.

It is of course excellent to see how Nordic American Tankers has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. Take a more thorough look at Nordic American Tankers' financial health with this free report on its balance sheet .

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Nordic American Tankers the TSR over the last 1 year was -39%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Nordic American Tankers shareholders are down 39% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 2.0%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 2% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Nordic American Tankers has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about.
