China said Friday that it has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization in response to the new U.S. tariffs. In a statement, China's commerce ministry said that the new U.S. tariffs are "typical unilateral bullying" that violate WTO rules. Beijing called on the U.S. to withdraw the levies.
This week, the U.S. imposed an additional tariff of 34% on Chinese imports. That tariff comes on top of previous levies the U.S. has placed on Chinese imports, bringing the total tariffs those goods will face to around 70%, according to economists. China responded Friday with tariffs on 34% on U.S. goods.
China's WTO move is unlikely to have much impact since the organization's mechanism for resolving trade disputes has been effectively inoperative since President Trump's first term.
