Chevron to Cut 600 Jobs in California, 700 in Houston by End of This Year -- OPIS

Chevron expects to slash about 600 jobs in San Ramon, Calif., and around 700 in downtown Houston by the end of this year as part of its plans to restructure the company and cut costs, a spokeswoman said on Friday.

In an email statement, the spokeswoman said the layoffs are part of Chevron's plan to simplify its operating model and position the Houston-based integrated energy company for long-term competitiveness.

"Chevron anticipates an initial reduction of approximately 600 workers in San Ramon and approximately 700 workers in Downtown Houston, scheduled through 2025," she said.

The spokeswoman said Chevron recently notified state government agencies in California and Texas of the job cuts as required by the WARN Act. She added that Chevron is offering severance benefits and outplacement support.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988 requires companies with 100 or more employees to give 60 days' notice before a layoff, plant closure or relocation.

In February, Chevron said it would reduce the size of its global workforce by 15% to 20% between now and the end of 2026. In addition, it would cut structural costs by $2 billion to $3 billion by the end of next year, with some residual impact in 2027 and beyond.

Chevron recently moved its corporate headquarters to Houston from San Ramon. The company has in recent years been pushing back against California's efforts to crack down on fossil fuel operations in the state.

Chevron operates oil refineries in Richmond and El Segundo in California; Pasadena, Texas; Pascagoula, Miss.; and Salt Lake City.
