Lowe's Artisan Design Group Purchase Signals Strategy Shift -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1503 ET - Lowe's acquisition of Artisan Design Group departs from its core strategy, drawing in bigger pro builders, D.A. Davidson analysts say in a research note. The analysts say Lowe's seems to have mainly targeted smaller professional home builders in the past, while Home Depot has chased after bigger, more complex builders. With Artisan's customer base on the larger pro side, Lowe's likely sees this acquisition as a setup for future growth, the analysts say. "It is a relatively minor deal. But we think it is interesting strategically in that it opens up a new customer base," the analysts wrote, adding the deal expands Lowe's current $1 trillion addressable market by around $50 billion.
