Insiders who bought Collective Mining Ltd. (TSE:CNL) stock in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The company's market value increased by CA$189m as a result of the stock's 19% gain over the same period. Put another way, the original US$794.9k acquisition is now worth US$2.64m.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by insider Pasquale DiCapo for CA$250k worth of shares, at about CA$5.00 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of CA$14.25. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.
While Collective Mining insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. They paid about CA$4.30 on average. We don't deny that it is nice to see insiders buying stock in the company. However, we do note that they were buying at significantly lower prices than today's share price. Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Collective Mining insiders own 26% of the company, worth about CA$319m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. However, our analysis of transactions over the last year is heartening.
