TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Police Chief General Police Listyo Sigit Prabowo considers the 32 percent reciprocal tariff policy imposed by the United States on imports from Indonesia a common challenge. He hopes that the Trump tariff policy can be faced with close cooperation between the central and regional governments.
Sigit conveyed this after inaugurating the Gold Coast Bengkong International Ferry Port in Batam City on Monday, April 14, 2025. ''Batam City remains optimistic amidst the dynamic situation where Trump issues policies that impact Indonesian imports with a 32 percent tariff increase,'' said the Police Chief to the media after reviewing the private port owned by entrepreneur Tek Po, also known as Abi.
Sigit continued that Trump's tariffs are a common challenge to face. He also revealed that President Prabowo Subianto is currently conducting foreign visits in response to Trump's tariffs by opening new export points.
''This is our challenge, and later we can confront global dynamics. Cooperation between the region and the center is necessary. Currently, the president is continuing his foreign visits, also preparing alternatives, evaluations, and new export points to face the impact of Trump's policies,'' he said.
Sigit also appreciates Batam City's growing foreign tourism amidst the uncertain global economic conditions. He sees an 11 percent increase in foreign tourist visits to Batam in 2024, with a planned 20 percent increase in 2025.
''This is good news because in other places, there is a decrease, while here, the target is increasing,' said Sigit.
Not only Sigit, the port inauguration event was also attended by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), Vice Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission Johanis Tanak, Immigration Minister represented by Acting Director General of Immigration Saffar M. Godam, Transportation Minister represented by Special Class I Batam Port Master Capt. Bharto Ari Rajarjo, Riau Islands Governor H. Ansar Ahmad, and Riau Islands Deputy Governor Nyanyang Haris Pratamura.
Indonesia has decided to take negotiation steps in response to Trump's tariff policy. This week, the Indonesian delegation will depart for the United States to negotiate trade tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
