The Interior Department has directed the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to halt all construction immediately on the Empire Wind project, Secretary Doug Burgum said in an X post Wednesday.
The decision, made in consultation with Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, comes after a federal review suggested the Biden Administration rushed the project's approval without sufficient analysis, according to the post.
The lease to the renewable-energy project, located 15 to 30 miles south of New York's Long Island, was initially awarded to Norwegian energy company Equinor in 2017 and is being developed in two separate projects.
BP bought into the Empire Wind project--and Equinor's Beacon Wind project--for $1.1 billion in 2020. Earlier this year, Equinor said it would take over BP's stake in the Empire Wind project in exchange for ceding ownership of its Beacon Wind lease and project.
