Some of the losses seen by insiders who purchased AU$386.5k worth of Alma Metals Limited (ASX:ALM) shares over the past year were recovered after the stock increased by 25% over the past week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at AU$142k since the time of purchase.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Alma Metals Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Executive Chairman Alasdair Cooke bought AU$200k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.008 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of AU$0.005. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 48.81m shares for AU$386k. On the other hand they divested 668.66k shares, for AU$6.0k. In total, Alma Metals insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Does Alma Metals Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. From our data, it seems that Alma Metals insiders own 15% of the company, worth about AU$1.2m. We do note, however, it is possible insiders have an indirect interest through a private company or other corporate structure. Whilst better than nothing, we're not overly impressed by these holdings.
