OpenAI, the artificial intelligence firm backed by Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) and SoftBank (SFTBY, Financial), is reportedly expecting its revenue to surge by nearly 1,000% over the next few years. According to a report from The Information, the company is aiming to bring in $125 billion by 2029, up from around $13 billion this year.

A big part of that jump is expected to come from ChatGPT subscriptions, which could hit $50 billion by 2029. That's up from $8 billion in projected revenue for 2025. Access to OpenAI's programming tools—its application programming interface—is also set to grow, potentially reaching $22 billion from $2 billion this year.

Then there are AI agents—software tools that can carry out tasks on their own. Those could generate $29 billion by the end of the decade. Some versions of these agents are already priced between $2,000 and $20,000 a month depending on their capabilities.

Other possible revenue streams include ads and shopping integrated into ChatGPT. As of March, ChatGPT had 20 million subscribers and 600 million monthly users. OpenAI's latest $40 billion fundraising round has pushed its valuation to $300 billion.
