How is the trade turmoil affecting the American economy and U.S. blue-chip stocks? Investors will get plenty of fresh data next week, including the first jobs report covering a period after President Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs announcement and an early readout on growth in the first three months of the year.
Meanwhile, a clutch of "Magnificent Seven" names-Amazon.com, Apple, Meta Platforms and Microsoft-will headline a busy week for corporate earnings. Other companies on deck include carmakers, consumer-goods giants, credit-card companies, major U.S. oil producers and others.
Monday, April 28
-- Canadian elections: The ruling Liberals, led by Mark Carney, are up against Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives in a contest that has revolved around the question of how Canada will deal with President Trump.
Tuesday, April 29
-- Earnings $(AM)$: Altria, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Pfizer, UPS.
-- Economic data: Home price indexes from S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller are due at 9 a.m. ET. A readout from the Conference Board on consumer confidence, and the JOLTS report, or the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, follow at 10 a.m.
-- Earnings (PM): Mondelez, Starbucks, Visa.
Wednesday, April 30
-- GDP: An initial reading on U.S. economic growth for the first three months of the year is due at 8:30 a.m. Gross domestic product could shrink 0.4% on a seasonally adjusted annual basis, according to a recent reading from the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow model, even adjusting for distortions caused by crossborder gold trading.
-- Inflation data:The personal consumption expenditures price index is due at 8:30 a.m. The PCE is the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, and this readout comes a week before the Fed's May 7 rate decision.
-- Earnings: Caterpillar reports before the bell. Facebook parent Meta Platforms and Microsoft are among the companies due to report after the close.
Thursday, May 1
-- Bank of Japan: A rate decision is due from the Japanese central bank.
-- Earnings (AM): Eli Lilly, Mastercard, McDonald's, CVS Health.
-- Global markets holidays: Many countries observe Labor Day on May 1. Numerous markets, including those in Hong Kong, mainland China, France, Germany and Italy, will be closed.
-- Manufacturing PMIs: Two purchasing managers indexes for the manufacturing sector are due.
-- Earnings (PM): Amazon, Amgen, Apple, AIG, U.S. Steel, MicroStrategy.
Friday, May 2
-- Jobs report: The monthly nonfarm payrolls report for April is due at 8:30 a.m.
-- Tariffs: Following an executive order signed by President Trump, the "de minimis" exemption for shipping lower-value goods is due to end.
-- Earnings (AM): The oil majors Chevron and Exxon Mobil are among companies due to report before the opening bell.
Saturday, May 3
-- Berkshire Hathaway's shareholder meeting: Warren Buffett is due to answer questions from stockholders at the so-called "Woodstock for capitalists."
