Beijing has been asking U.S. firms doing business in China what components they import from America that they can't get elsewhere, out of apparent concern that tariffs could end up disrupting production in China.
"My interpretation is that they want to make sure the Chinese tariffs don't harm their economy," said Michael Hart, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, whose members include Boeing, Honeywell and Qualcomm.
China has raised tariffs on imports of U.S. goods in retaliation for levies imposed by the Trump administration. While China says it is prepared to keep fighting, the outreach to U.S. companies in China suggests Beijing is wary of spillover effects that could harm local supply chains. Reuters earlier reported on the communication with U.S. companies.
